The mayor, new oil portrait

For a local exhibition at the end of April I painted this portrait of our mayor.
The painting is currently in the 'staring at' fase, I put it aside so I can casually glance at it when I'm in my studio. A painting is never finished, only abandoned..

'The mayor', oil on canvas, 60x40cm, no longer available

Live music in life painting class

Yesterday night in life painting class we had an accordeon-player performing for us.
I managed to do 2 oil sketches and tried to stay loose in my painting.
I used watermixable oil on gessoed watercolour paper for this,  an ideal medium for these quick sketches. You can thin the paint with water and use it in a watercolour kind of way or use the paint like it comes straight out of the tube for more impasto style of painting.

A new painting for a local exhibition "De Hefbrug" that runs from April 10 until the 25th of June.
I was attracted to the lights and nice reflections in the water.

Bold brushwork

"Keba profile", oil on canvas, 24x30cm, nfs

Last night in life drawing class I wanted to focus on using thick paint and bold brushwork.
Painting thick is hard work and requires you to be super focused, if you want to do it right at least..
To prevent being caught up in all kinds of color choices I decided to limit my colors to only black (ivory black) and white (titanium white).
I premixed 3 grays so I had 5 values to work with. I also used the palette knife in some parts of the background and for the slash of light on his collar.
I really have to focus to keep the bold brushstrokes and prevent them from being smooshed together.

When the painting is dry I'm considering using a glaze of transparent oxide brown to give the image a warmer look, I prepared a version in Photoshop.

Which version do you prefer?

Plein air, finally!

Today I went to the Amsterdamse Waterleiding Duinen, a nature reserve South of Amsterdam with painting buddy Cas van der Sluijs.
The day started out very grey and we had a little bit of rain but soon the weather cleared up.
We managed to do 2 paintings.

Thursday night life painting class, backlit woman

Last night, almost everyone showed up for life painting class so it was very crowded. I had a spot directly opposite the main light that lit the model. To prevent being blinded by the light I had to hide behind my canvas. It was fun though to paint the rim light and to make the skintones dark enough for the light effect to read.
