'it's that time of year..'

oil on gallery wrap canvas, 5x7 (13x18cm)
My brother and his family were visiting from Australia the last few weeks and we went for a few days to Disneyland Europe.  One day when we went into the park very early I noticed the dramatic light on one of these Micky pumpkins with the dark blue waterfall as a nice backdrop.

I prepared this canvas with a Gamblin oil ground which makes a nice surface to paint on. The oil doesn't get absorbed as quickly as is the case on an acrylic gesso primed canvas.
The palette used here was ultramarine blue dark, transparent oxide red, cad red medium, cad yellow light, titanium white and a tiny bit of permanent rose for the reflected colormix.

October! Plein air

Here's my entry for the October Artists helping Artists challenge.
Edit: Dont know what is going on with blogger but If you can't click on the image to get a bigger picture then here is a link to the bigger version.

Went out painting last sunday to give the new paint a workout. I thought it would be fun to do a painting of my painting buddy Cas. Decided to also try a smoother panel since a lot of painters seem to prefer a smooth surface to paint on.  I learned that I'm not one of those :)
Especially on the darker passages where you use thinner transparent paint it was hard to get to paint to stick to the surface. Did some additional tweaking at home.

on the job..
